We did a fun tour of the wheelhouse and learned from the Captain that Viking ships utilize four propellers instead of a traditional rudder. Viking also provided an option to extend your trip a few extra days in Prague for an additional charge. Every night on the river cruise there’s entertainment in the lounge. So far, we’ve had the onboard musician at the keyboard and dancing, Slovakian folk dancing show and the goulash event.

Also unlike many other cruises or guided tours, almost everything was included, which made it feel like a truly relaxing vacation. We had a wonderful time and especially loved how organized the entire Viking journey was, from pre-departure to on-board, everything was seamless. I would recommend this trip if you enjoy small colorful towns, World War II history and good food. We did have gorgeous weather though, so were able to spend as much time outside as we wanted. If it was raining or too cold, it might be nicer to have a view from your stateroom. I will note, the only slight disappointment is that I told him it was our honeymoon and he said he would make a note in our file.

Most people on our cruise wore casual dresses or slacks with button down shirts for dinner. But by the end of our cruise, people were becoming more casual and showing up in jeans and shorts. It also made the tour group following the tour guide very quiet, which seemed to surprise people looking at the tour group walking down the street in silence. Everyone was listening to their headsets and not speaking to one another. The Viking cruise line has its own tour buses that will take you from location to location.
If you want to be pampered for two weeks and make wonderful new friends, then Viking is the cruise line for you. Viking advertises so heavily in the US that for some reason I hadn’t considered there to be other options. Cruisers also have the option of choosing to increase or decrease this amount, and/or provide tips directly to the staff with whom they interacted the most. This makes the process easy but also flexible for each passenger’s preference. Viking bills each passenger a set tip amount per day to be shared with all the staff.

As a solo traveler and someone who doesn’t fly, it was a challenge to figure out how to get to Budapest. After one night in Munich, Germany, it was an eight hour train ride to Budapest. Budapest, Hungary, on the beautiful and sometimes-blue Danube, has so much to experience. The views, the food, the staff...I couldn’t have asked for more during my much-anticipated vacation to China.
I knew from past river cruises, if I saw tree trunks submerged and debris quickly flowing past us, it meant trouble. Tomorrow, our Grand European Tour river cruise would begin with a full day of sightseeing before we even got underway. Be sure to get travel insurance for your river cruise.
